About the film
"Black Bag," directed by Steven Soderbergh, is a spy thriller centered around George Woodhouse, a National Cyber Security Centre operative, and his wife, Kathryn, also a high-ranking intelligence officer. When a top-secret cyber weapon called Severus is leaked, George is tasked with investigating the potential mole, and his own wife is among the suspects.
The film opens in London on a Friday night. British intelligence officer George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) meets with his superior, Meacham (Gustaf Skarsgard). He tells George that five suspects have been named in the leak of a highly-classified software program called Severus. One of the suspects is George’s wife, fellow officer Kathryn St. James (Cate Blanchett). Meacham gives George one week to find the culprit.
The film explores themes of marital trust, loyalty, and the compromises individuals make in high-stakes careers, particularly within the realm of espionage. The "black bag" in the title refers to the secrets and confidential information that intelligence agents keep hidden, even from their spouses
The Hollywood Reporter: a "handsomely crafted thriller that luxuriates in tension and ambiguity."
The New York Times : "a stylish puzzle-box of a movie" with "layered performances and serpentine plotting,"
IndieWire praised its "glacial cool and moral ambiguity," "feels like vintage Soderbergh—unapologetically clever and emotionally remote.
