About the film
William Friedkin directs one of the most horrifying movies ever made.
When young Regan (Linda Blair) starts acting odd -- levitating, speaking in tongues -- her worried mother (Ellen Burstyn) seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. As people begin to die, the girl's mother realizes her daughter has been possessed by the devil. A local priest (Jason Miller) makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert (Max von Sydow) to help with the difficult job.
The director's cut includes a famous, highly disturbing sequence where the possessed Regan crawls backward down the stairs like a spider.
Produced by William Peter Blatty, who adapted his own 1971 novel.
One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events.
The Exorcist is a stylistic landmark for the supernatural horror genre and widely considered one of the greatest—and most unsettling—horror movies ever made.
