About the film
Young Muriel (Toni Collette) feels unloved and unappreciated in her suburban home, and sets out for Sydney, where she hopes to fulfill her dream of a traditional white wedding. Armed only with her Abba dance routines and an eagerness to please, she stumbles into an arranged marriage with a hunky South African swimmer. However, her dreams of marriage are soon tested by her best friend Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths) falling seriously ill.
Muriel’s Wedding is celebrated for its blend of quirky Aussie comedy, Hollywood romance, and a richly layered story of self-discovery and complex family dynamics.
This ode to dreamers is one of Australia’s most cherished classics, powered by Toni Collette’s luminous breakout performance and a joyous ABBA soundtrack.
Come and join us three decades on, to celebrate one of Australia’s most cherished films which still resonates in surprising ways.
Winner of Best Film, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Sound at the Australian Film Institute Awards
