About the film
Based on the novel by Claire Keegan, (who also wrote the short story behind the Oscar-nominated Irish language feature “The Quiet Girl,”) and inspired by true events, "Small Things" is set in 1980s Ireland at a time when the Catholic Church wields absolute power over the faithful.
Oscar winner Cillian Murphy delivers a stunning performance as devoted father Bill Furlong, who, while working as a coal merchant to support his family, discovers disturbing secrets kept by the local convent — and uncovers truths of his own — forcing him to confront his past and the complicit silence of a small Irish town controlled by the Catholic Church.
In 2022, the book won the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction and was shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize and the Booker Prize.
In an interview with RTE Radio Murphy explained why he wanted to take on the project, 'I fell in love with the book. [Claire] is an extraordinary writer. The power of the story and the simplicity of the story, it just knocked me out, really.'
The film also stars Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, Emily Watson, Clare Dunne, and Helen Behan.
