The Summer Book (PG)

Eight-year-old Sophia spends the summer with her father and grandmother on her family’s island in Finland’s Gulf, learning about the natural world around her. All three are grieving the recent death of Sophia’s mother, each in their own way. Directed by Charlie McDowell and starring Glenn Close, this drama is based on Tove Jansson’s novel and follows the quiet rhythms of a family coming to terms with loss.

Shot on location in the Finnish archipelago, the film is directed by Charlie McDowell (Windfall, The one I love). 8-times Oscar-nominated actress Glenn Close plays one of the leading roles as the grandmother, and Emily Matthews plays the little girl Sophia. This is the first film role for 10-year-old Matthews, who lives in Finland.  Sophia’s father is played by Anders Danielsen Lie, a Norwegian actor who has been nominated for an Academy Award for the film The Worst Person in the World.

“The Summer Book is a European film that values its audience. The story is rich, human and emotional”,  Glenn Close.
